H.1997 An Act to protect sports medicine professionals

Type:  Healthcare

Currently, many states do not provide legal protection for sports medicine practitioners who travel to another state with an athletic team solely to provide care for that team.  Additionally, many medical liability insurance carriers will not provide medical liability coverage to sports medicine professionals who deliver care to their team during away games in states where they are not licensed to practice medicine. Hence, these providers must choose between either treating injured athletes at great professional risk, or reducing athletes’ access to timely health care services. This bill would protect sports medicine professionals from civil and criminal malpractice liability when they travel to Massachusetts to provide care to athletes and team personnel at professional or collegiate sporting events (this is a new bill).
