Legislation

H.3444 An Act relative to searches of female inmates

Type:  Criminal Justice and Women's Corrections

This legislation was filed in response to a case at the Western Regional Women’s Correctional Center where male correction officers were allowed to videotape female inmate strip searches. This practice was determined to be in violation of privacy and search protections by the U.S. District Court. This bill would require that if an inmate strip search is videotaped, the operator of the camera must be of the same sex as the inmate, except in an emergency situation. This will ensure inmates are not subjected to degrading search practices and that our correctional policies are in line with constitutional principles (this is a new bill).
