MassEquality Endorses Kay!

Type:  Campaign

September 20, 2012

Representative Kay Khan

18 Saint Marys Street

Newton Lower Falls, MA 02462

Dear Representative Kay Khan:

We are very pleased to inform you that MassEquality has endorsed you in your reelection campaign for State Representative.

MassEquality is the only statewide, grassroots organization working to ensure that every lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) person in Massachusetts is protected from cradle to grave – with equal rights and opportunities in schools, in marriage and family life, at work and in retirement. MassEquality provides a range of assistance to endorsed candidates. MassEquality’s goal for this election cycle is to stand with, develop and elect candidates who are outspoken champions of justice and equality for all LGBT people across Massachusetts.

The 2012 election comes at a pivotal time for these issues. LGBT people continue to face discrimination and oppression in Massachusetts. An increase in anti-equality legislators in 2010 produced a new wave of state legislators who oppose providing even basic civil rights protections. Up to 40% of homeless, unaccompanied youth are LGBT, many homeless and alone because their families have rejected them. LGBT youth in school are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers because of bullying, and eight times more likely when their families also reject them. And despite our successful effort to pass the historic Transgender Equal Rights Bill, transgender people remain unprotected by law from discrimination in public places like restaurants, gas stations, banks, in public transportation and all other places where we all routinely conduct our daily lives. MassEquality will be looking to advance legislation to address these and other issues left to be resolved in Massachusetts and we’ll be looking for the help of our legislative champions to do so.

A supermajority of Massachusetts residents – like the majority of the country – steadfastly supports LGBT civil rights and equality. Since 2001, MassEquality has worked hard and successfully to elect a supermajority of state legislators who support LGBT equality. This year is no different.  We look forward to working with you on your campaign through this election cycle.

Sincerely,

Kara Suffredini
